[in this paper we revisit our large Registered Report on the social perception of tears (link) to dive deeper into the effect on whether seeing someone shed a tear leads to reduced perception of competence. with our study with 7000 respondents in 41 countries we find that there is no general negative effect of tears on perceived competence; but when the situation is inappropriate to cry in it reduces perceived competence, and when the target person is seen as honest it increases competence]
